Introducing Our Refreshed and Renewed Publications

Hot off the Press – Our Renewed Publications

We’re excited to share the first batch of our refreshed and renewed publications with you!

In the past, our publications were lovingly handcrafted by volunteers. Each page was xeroxed, bound together by hand with heavyweight construction paper covers, and taped with binding tape. This method worked wonderfully as long as we had volunteers. However, finding volunteers became increasingly difficult, and issues with missing or misplaced materials arose. Additionally, copies of copies led to faded and worn-out materials. To address these challenges, we have embraced modern technology and updated our publishing process.

Our Old Handcrafted Books

We recently undertook the task of sorting through our catalog and library closet to locate original typed manuscripts and the cleanest copies of our original publications. Fortunately, we found everything. We have now digitized all original publications and cleaned up the text digitally. This has allowed us to organize and securely store the originals.

Digitizing our publications also enabled us to free up space and eliminate unnecessary items. We now maintain a minimum of four digital backups: one on my personal computer, one on a portable hard drive, one on a flash drive, and one on Google Cloud accessible by three trusted individuals.

We are currently in the process of digitally creating new and improved printed publications. Instead of relying on volunteers for assembly and shipping, we now use Lulu to print and sell our publications through our website. These new publications are not only more aesthetically pleasing but also come with the convenience of having the shipping handled by the company. Although this approach may incur additional costs, it saves us the time and effort of coordinating volunteer labor and managing shipping logistics.

An inside peek of our Bulletins – Volume One

With great pride, we announce our step into the 21st century with the launch of our new and improved publications. The first two releases are the Wilkes Genealogical Society Bulletins, Volume One and Volume Two. These books have indexes.

Keep an eye out for more releases, as these turned out even better than we anticipated.

Thank you for your continued support!
