This section contains the genealogical research files of Dr. John Henry Scalf, Jr. He generously donated his work to the Wilkes Genealogical Society, where it is housed in our library for public use. We are now making these files available online for our members. His research is meticulously sourced and a valuable contribution to Wilkes County genealogy.
Dr. Scalf was born on November 17, 1926, in Nyack, New York, his father, John, was 25 and his mother, Mary, was 23.
Dr. John Henry Scalf Jr. was a distinguished professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). He earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Stetson University, followed by a doctoral degree from East Texas State University.
Dr. Scalf married Dorothy Campbell on August 21, 1949, in Wilkes, North Carolina at the age of 22. She was a dedicated educator in the New Hanover County school system. They had one child, John Michael Scalf, during their marriage.
He was related to “Yankee” John Church. He did extensive genealogical research on this family line. His wife donated all his life’s work to WGS.
Dr. Scalf died on September 17, 1995, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 68, and was buried in Mountlawn Memorial Park
